What we look at in your photo:
- Size of the damage — a chip the size of a dime is a different job than a 14-inch crack.
- Location on the windshield — driver's line of sight, edge proximity, and ADAS camera area all change the math.
- Vehicle make, model, and trim — modern vehicles with ADAS calibration requirements involve more work than a 2008 sedan.
- Age and condition of the damage — fresh chips repair cleaner than chips that have collected dirt and moisture for months.

What insurance typically covers
Many NY comprehensive policies cover windshield repair with no deductible, because insurers would rather pay for a small repair today than a full replacement later. Coverage details vary by carrier and policy — when you call, ask us about insurance billing and we'll walk you through what your specific policy is likely to do.
Replacement is different: your comprehensive deductible typically applies. NY does not have a zero-deductible glass law (unlike Florida or Kentucky).
If you don't carry comprehensive — or you'd rather not file a claim — we'll quote you a cash price. We don't mark prices up for insurance jobs and discount them for cash. The price is the price.

How to know if a chip is repairable
Most chips are repairable. A few rules of thumb:
- Size: Smaller than a quarter is almost always repairable. Up to about the size of a half-dollar is usually repairable. Bigger than that and we'd need to see it.
- Location: A chip directly in the driver's primary line of sight may need replacement for safety/inspection reasons, even if it's small. Edge chips (within 2 inches of the windshield edge) can sometimes be tricky because the glass has less structural support there.
- Depth: If the inner layer of the windshield is cracked too, it's a replacement. If only the outer layer is damaged, it's a repair.
- Age: Fresh chips repair cleaner than chips that have collected dirt and moisture for months. If a chip is brand new, get it sealed before the next rain or freeze.
